Vessel Emerging #1
This is a Goblet turned from, and still a part of, a piece of Podacarpus. The knot tried to get out a couple times, but I was having none of it. I like the way it turned out. It's 4-1/2" tall and about 2-3/4" wide.
Podocarpus (/ˌpoʊdəˈkɑrpəs/; from the Greek, podos, meaning "foot", and karpos, meaning "fruit") is a genus of conifers, the most numerous and widely distributed of the podocarp family, (Wikipedia). Origins: Gondwana, evidently.
I thought it was an Oleander when it was in my neighbor's back yard. I've turned a few things from it before now. But I think it's finally reached the stage at which it likes to be turned. The colors and the figure it presents create a fine marbelling effect that really comes out with some fervent polishing and plenty of shellac.
